Bac k in November, our community group at Liberty Christian Academy went to the Bicycle Man’s Shop to help clean the warehouse and repair bikes. I had always thought the Bicycle Shop was a great place; my opinion still hasn’t changed, but, instead, it has grown stronger due to the fact that they bring joy to a lot of people. I didn’t know how long it took to repair those bikes until I actually helped. It can take up to an hour to get just one bike done—the stuff they have to do just to finish the bike is crazy precise. The thought that they just work for the smiles on people’s faces and not money is amazing.
“Hallelujah, we get a day out of school!” These were my initial thoughts upon learning we were going to help the folks out at The Bicycle Man's Shop for our first community service project. The shop’s purpose is to take donated bikes and generally repair and fix them. Each Christmas, the workers hand out the bikes to poor children for free. | I, along with a few friends, was assigned the task of sweeping this gargantuan facility. This was time-consuming. When we finally finished that job, we got to the real fun and joined the others in pulling apart bikes, airing up tires, and pulling tires off of wheels. The latter was probably my favorite task. This consumed the rest of our time at the shop and we headed out. My opinion of the place was significantly improved--it is a large-scale operation run by only three people. It was quite a good time once we got to the actual bike-repair part. I’d love to go back. |
